HON. JANET ODEI PAINTSIL SHARES SANITARY PADS AND GIVES MENSTRUAL HEALTH EDUCATION TO YOUNG GIRLS IN AGONA EAST

The District Chief Executive of Agona East, Hon. Janet Odei Paintsil has shared over thousands of sanitary pads to young girls across the Agona East District. The timely gesture which was coupled with menstrual health education to the young girls in some selected schools and villages across the district happened from Thursday 23rd – Friday, 24th June, 2022.

The event was attended by Representatives from the Agona East Education Directorate and the District Health Directorate, and some personalities in the Agona East District.

According to the DCE, since she has experienced the discomfort that sometimes comes with the monthly cycle as a woman, it’s appropriate to periodically educate the young girls about some dos and don’ts regarding it, as well as providing them with sanitary pads since some cannot afford it. She said the distribution could even reduce teenage pregnancy, as some men take advantage of getting the innocent girls sanitary pads and later sleep with them.

Speaking to the media after the event, Hon. Janet said she is bent on replicating the gesture periodically in order to eradicate, if not, reduce the excesses that is mostly associated with menstruation amongst young girls in Agona East. “To me, I’m more particularly concerned about the education. Even if I give them these pads and they don’t use and dispose them well, it’ll still affect them, hence this menstrual health education” – she added.
