5th Annual AFRIFAMUACAA AWARDS Los Angeles California

ROBERT ABEKU ANSAH (GHANA)

Robert Abeku Ansah is a young and vibrant Ghanaian born on the 8th of September, 1987. He is a profound community leader, gender and youth activist, civil servant, and change agent. He is the last of ten children by his parents and had his basic and secondary education at Swedru Holy Quran Islamic School and Apam Secondary School respectively in the Central Region of Ghana.
He pursued a Bachelor of Arts degree in African Studies at the University of Cape Coast, Ghana from 2008-2012. He was appointed by the Centre for African and International Studies of the same University as Teaching Assistant until September 2013. In January 2015, he enrolled for a Master of Arts degree program at the Institute for Development and Technology Management in Cape Coast, Ghana, and graduated with honors in Education, Gender and Development.

He volunteered to work at the Agona Asafo Community Library as Administrative Director and doubled as the Youth Representative on the Library Management Board from 2013-2017. Within that same period, he was the Executive Director and Founder of Save the Last Tree (SALT) foundation Ghana. The foundation, in partnership with international collaborators in UK and Germany, supports many educational programs (SDG4), healthcare delivery (SDG3), community services (SDG11), and climate action (SDG13) programs. The foundation has so far supported reading programs to improve primary school pupils in Agona Asafo. The program has also provided extra tuition support for basic school students to improve performance at basic and secondary school levels. In all, over 160 girls have received bicycles from the foundation to access secondary education instead of walking several miles from the villages to communities where there are schools. Five out of the completed number, are currently pursuing various degrees in three different public universities in Ghana.

Over three hundred students in Agona Asafo have been registered under the National Health Insurance Scheme in Ghana to access free healthcare delivery. In 2015, the foundation donated an Oxygen Generator to the Agona Asafo Health Centre and is also constructing a maternity facility for the same center. In partnership with the National Forestry Commission, the foundation is collaborating and is planting 5,000 trees in the District as part of the National Greening Project to support our environmental greening project.

From 2015 to 2019, Robert Ansah was elected as the Assembly Member for the Agona Asafo electoral area of the Agona East District Assembly. As Assembly Member, he championed community participation in local governance and mobilized Chiefs, Queen mothers, Elders, and community members for rural development. He was promoted at the District Assembly as the Convener for the Development Planning Sub-Committee where he chaired the committee responsible for initiating developmental projects for the entire district.
In April 2017, Mr. Ansah was appointed by the Government of Ghana as Special Assistant to the Minister of State in charge of Tertiary Education at the Ministry of Education. In that capacity, he continued to contribute to higher education policy conceptualization and implementation, research, data analysis, public relations, monitoring and evaluation of Government policies and programs, etc.
He was also appointed by the Government in January 2019 as a member of a high-powered Committee on Centralized Application Processing Services (CAPS) – a platform for application and admission into universities in Ghana. The Committee included eminent Ghanaian academics and stakeholders of higher education in Ghana including Vice-Chancellors, Registrars of universities, student leaders, heads of agencies, etc.

The African Centre for Education Development, based in Nigeria, appointed him in 2020 as Director in charge of International Relations and partnerships. He has been part of the Centre’s publication and research materials that investigate and interrogate questions relating to education and its development in Africa.

He is currently a Policy Planning, Projects, Research, Monitoring, and Evaluation Officer at the Commission for Technical and Vocational Education and Training (C-TVET). The Commission is an agency of the Ministry of Education mandated to regulate, promote and administer technical and vocational education and training for transformation and innovation for sustainable development in Ghana. He is currently part of a team of experts working on a National TVET Report for the Government of Ghana.
He has widely traveled and participated in many international, national, and local conferences across the world.
