MP FOR AGONA EAST, MAAME POKUAH SAWYER, PUBLICLY REMOVES POSTERS OF PROF KWESI YANKAH

The New Patriotic Party in Agona East, noted with grave displeasure and concern the mediocre, uncultured and unethical behavior of the Member of Parliament for Agona East Constituency, Maame Pokua Sawyer.

The wisdom of morality has it that the title Honourable is not just a
word but a representation of worthiness, decency, nobility and an embodiment of high moral standard. If the above attributions fall within the definition of the honourable title then Maame Pokua Sawyer, the MP for Agona East, is a stranger to this title.

It would be recalled that on March 27, 2020, two known NDC members
were arrested at Mankrong Nkwanta for allegedly removing posters belonging to Prof Kwesi Yankah and the NPP in Agona East. These two were subsequently arraigned before the Swedru Magistrate’s Court and
are currently standing trial.

What is intriguing is that these two suspected law breakers were subsequently seen in a viral video on social media, alleging that they
were instructed by Queenstar Pokua Sawyer, the MP, to remove, deface and destroy the over 15,000 posters printed and displayed in Agona East Constituency by Prof Kwesi Yankah and the NPP.

As though that was not enough, on Sunday 19th April 2020 at Mankrong
Junction, Maame Pokua, a law maker, was personally seen removing posters of Prof Yankah at the Mankrong Nkwanta market center. The explanation offered by her regarding her actions was to the effect that she constructed the said market. This behavior and subsequent reason for her actions is an affront to democracy and an embarrassment to her portfolio as an MP.

Ladies and gentlemen, it will interest you to know that even when the case is being processed awaiting advice from the Attorney General’s office, Maame Pokua still has the effrontery to proceed to destroy additional posters.

One may ask, did the MP put up the thousands of structures within the
constituency on which her posters are pasted? What of the electricity
poles? Clearly this action by the MP defeats logic

We have a feeling that this act rather reveals deeper intent of creating an atmosphere of intimidation against political opponents targeted at sparking confusion and unnecessary tensions in the constituency. It is also a true reflection of the arrogant and disrespectful character trait of the MP which has been consistently displayed over the years against humanity, including her own party
faithfuls. Such attitudes undermine the principle of free and fair elections and the basic tenets of laws governing elections in this country.

The discerning Youth of Agona East, wish to push forward forcefully that we will not be invited to such outmoded act of insane political masturbation.

This unscrupulous unprovoked act by the MP has the potential to spark violence in once a peaceful constituency but the NPP membership remains resolute in its quest to be disciplined and maintain the peace to promote actions that are within the remit of legality.

We believe in the supremacy of the law and the tenets of equality
before the law. Without prejudice we believe the court will find an amicable solution to this irresponsible and provocative act in this period where the entire nation is fighting together to rid the nation of COVID19.

We therefore, by this release, wish to commend our supporters for their composure in the face of provocation and encourage same to continue to be law abiding while we allow the court processes to work.

That said we are by this statement throwing a caution to the MP to put an end to this lawless act of defacing posters belonging to Prof. Yankah and NPP. This is the second time we are throwing this caution and we can assure her that there will be no time.
We also urge the security and legal systems in Ghana to also take action of such gross misconduct of a lawmaker who should know better.

I thank you all for your attention.

Jointly signed…..

Hon Seth Arhin,
Constituency Treasurer
Samuel Donkoh,
Convener, Youth for Prof (Y4P-20)
